PYB Unpacked: Growth for One

“I have so many favorite memories from this past year. I loved seeing our students growing in confidence in their skills and abilities. Whether that was in the weight room, or on a stage with a microphone in hand, or even something as simple as learning the importance of writing a deadline down in a calendar, there was growth.

If I had to choose one story of growth to share from this past year, I would share about one our students named Paige. She was the only girl to brave the “Crossfit track” and she hadn’t lifted very heavy before. Paige also had a tendency to not call herself a leader at the beginning of this past year. So, this student joined the sports leadership track with neither sports nor leadership readily available in her personal skill tool bag (yet). I think however, after meeting up with Paige a few times, I could see that there was a fire burning inside her, desiring growth and wanting to excel and perfect everything she touched. This fire is exactly what an athlete needs to max out with correct form or reach a new PR (personal record). This fire was also what a leader needs, for a leader is someone who values knowledge and boy, did Paige want to understand things.

Over the year, (after a few loving nudges), Paige began to find out that she in fact, was an excellent weightlifter and leader. Before long, she began out-lifting boys (and me) and knew that when she spoke, people listened. I think the most beautiful part for me, as I got to watch this growth directly from the sidelines, is Paige always sought growth with Christ first. While her new strength and voice were cool, Paige desired knowing Jesus with her whole being, and prioritized that above all else. It was an honor getting to know Paige this past year, and I’m sure her growth is not yet done. “
